At a time when companies like Hero Electric, Okinawa, Ampere, Ola, Ather, etc. have been leading the way in the electric two-wheeler segment, mainstream manufacturers like Hero MotoCorp, Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki have to make their first EV in India.

That will soon change, as electric two-wheelers have experienced strong growth in recent months. A number of factors come into play, including high gasoline costs, central/state government subsidies and availability of charging stations. It’s the right time for established players to stake their claim in the EV space.

Several new electric two-wheelers are expected to hit the market by the end of this year. One will be from Yamaha. Ahead of launch, it will likely be unveiled on April 11. Yamaha India has sent a Block Your Date invitation to their dealers.

While the invite doesn’t reveal much, it does say that the product will be Stylish, Sporty. Then it says it’s going to be an exciting new future with Yamaha. This probably indicates that the upcoming product is an electric vehicle – most likely an electric scooter.

Yamaha has already registered the name E01 in India. EC-05 name is also registered. This electric scooter is already on sale in Taiwan. It was developed in collaboration with Taiwan-based Gogoro Inc., one of the leading providers of EVs and battery-changing infrastructure.

Yamaha’s first electric car for the Indian market could be a maxi scooter. It will be a premium product, likely a competitor to Ather 450X and Bajaj Chetak. The scooter will likely be equipped with a fully digital LCD instrument console. Bluetooth-based connectivity features are expected to be offered. Users can access a range of features and functions through Yamaha’s smartphone app.

Specifications Yamaha Electric Scooter

Details on Yamaha’s India-spec electric scooter are scarce at the moment. In terms of performance, it could be comparable to a 110cc petrol scooter, such as Honda Activa, TVS Jupiter. The range could be around 70-80 km and the top speed of about 80-100 km/h. The scooter is expected to offer comfortable driving ergonomics.

It is expected to get multiple riding modes, which will determine speed and range. Yamaha’s electric scooter can get telescopic forks in the front and dual shock absorbers in the rear. Other features include: LED headlight, front and rear alloy wheels, trendy rear-view mirrors and a comfortable one-piece seat. Braking tasks are performed by disc brakes, integrated with ABS.

Like some other EV manufacturers, Yamaha could offer multiple ownership options. One is a subscription-based subscription backed by a battery exchange infrastructure. Users can purchase the scooter without a battery and pay a monthly subscription fee along with the cost of changing batteries. Official details are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks, while the launch could be sometime in May/June 2022.
