A week after the worldwide unveiling of its first electric scooter, Yamaha has launched Neo’s electric scooter in Europe. The Japanese two-wheeler giant has priced the e-scooter at EUR 3,005, which is equivalent to INR 2.52 lakh. It will go on sale in selected European markets from May this year.

It is an all-electric equivalent of a 50cc petrol scooter of a similar name sold by Yamaha in a few international markets. Yamaha has been producing 50cc scooters since the 1990s and Neo’s is one of the most popular. As expected, Neo’s borrows some inspiration from its petrol counterpart.

For example, Yamaha has kept some of the signature design cues from the original Neos, such as a pair of distinctive twin headlights in the new battery-powered scooter. As can be seen from the images, it shows off a youthful and futuristic design that is very attractive. Neo’s has a rounded yet compact body wrapped in minimalist styling. To protect body panels from scratches, the edges are wrapped with rubber profiles.

Yamaha Neo’s- Drivetrain Specifications

For the drivetrain, Neo’s is powered by a brushless DC hub motor that derives its power from a 50.4 V, 19.2 Ah lithium-ion battery pack weighing 8 kg. The scooter provides the provision of two removable battery packs of identical capacity to increase range. Neo’s comes with two riding modes: STD and Eco. In STD mode, this powertrain delivers peak power of 2.5 kW (3.4 hp) and 136 Nm of torque.

The rated power is 2.3 kW, while the top speed is limited to 40 km/h. In Eco mode, peak power drops to 1.58 kW, while maximum range on a single charge is 38.5 km. With a second battery pack, the estimated range can be extended to 68 km. Using a standard AC charger, the battery takes eight hours to go from 0 to 100 percent.

Hardware Specifications and Features

As for the hardware, the suspension duties in Neos are handled by KYB-sourced telescopic forks in the front and a single shock absorber in the rear. Braking is performed by a disc brake at the front and a drum brake at the rear. The electric scooter rides on 13-inch alloy wheels with low rolling resistance tires.

It gets an accessible 785mm seat height to go along with 135mm ground clearance, which is good enough for European roads. Even with a heavy battery pack, Neo’s is quite manoeuvrable at 90kg. Neo’s also gets a generous 27 liters of under-seat storage.

As far as features go, Neo’s gets an LCD instrument panel that’s compatible with Yamaha’s MyRide app. This allows the rider of a Yamaha electric scooter to remotely access information such as the vehicle’s battery status, route tracking, etc. on his/her phone. It also helps to display call and message notifications on the console. Other features on offer include keyless start and full LED lighting.

The launch of this new Yamaha Electric Scooter in India has not yet been confirmed. But Yamaha India is working on EVs. According to the latest update, they have scheduled a dealer meeting on April 11 to showcase the future of Yamaha India. It is likely that Yamaha will showcase their first India-spec electric scooter at this event.
