Ather Energy currently has the capacity to produce 5,000 electric scooters per month in addition to building its own lithium-ion battery pack
Electric two-wheelers, especially scooters, have seen tremendous growth in recent months, thanks to the push given by the Indian government to electric mobility. Ather Energy has emerged as one of the major contributors to electric mobility in our country in recent years.
The Bengaluru-based EV startup is currently the third largest manufacturer in the electric two-wheeler space in India, after Hero Electric and Okinawa. The company currently sells two electric scooters under its fold, including 450 Plus and 450X. Ather has been accelerating its network expansion across the country in recent times.
Sale of electric scooters from Ather February 2022
Where sales of gasoline scooters are declining, Ather has recorded 140 percent YoY growth compared to February 2021. The EV manufacturer has clocked cumulative sales volume of 2,042 scooters in February 2022. Ather sold approximately 850 electric scooters in February 2021 – translating to over 140% YoY growth. By January 2022, Ather had sold 2,825 scooters, translating into a 27% decline in MoM.
The low numbers despite growing demand are a result of the global shortage of semiconductor chips that has rocked the auto industry for more than a year. The ongoing crisis has led to a disruption in supply chain management, leaving the company unable to keep up with rising demand. Ather claims that only a fraction of pending orders were approved in February.
Set up new charging networks
The company is hopeful of an improvement in the market situation in the next 2-3 months, where supplier partners will be able to narrow the gap between supply and demand. On the other hand, Ather signed an MoU with Govt. of Karnataka to install 1000 charging networks across the state to make EVs mainstream. This development was confirmed by Ather Energy CEO Tarun Mehta on his official Twitter account.
Ather has also drawn up its growth plan for the coming years. Over the next three years, the EV manufacturer plans to increase its annual production capacity from 400,000 to one million scooters by the end of 2022, install 5,000 fast chargers across India, develop new products and expand its network to 600 stores.
Ather currently has 29 stores in 24 cities. More than 300 fast-charging Ather Grid Points are available in these cities. The EV company plans to expand its footprint to 100 cities across the country by March 2023. About 150 experience centers will be established.
On a slightly different topic, it was recently announced that Ather Energy will be the title sponsor of Gujarat Titans for a period of two years. The Ahmedabad-based franchise is one of two new additions to the Indian Premier League (IPL).
